Balcones
The client wanted to upgrade the lower level of their home by turning a large, underutilized flexspace into a theater and lounge room with a bar, as well as revamping the adjacent guest bath. The main challenge of the basement space was the low ceiling complete with exposed joists and oversized beams. In order to unify the ceiling we decided to insert a white oak slatted ceiling which also runs down the back wall where the projector screen is embedded. Within the slats a system of LED lighting was added to create dimmable, soft lighting which would not interfere with the screen. Each piece of timber was painstakingly cut and assembled on site. The beams were also wrapped in white oak and a custom, recessed projector was built into the ceiling, automatically lowering when in use. The white oak floor added a clean, timeless look while balancing the charcoal painted brick walls. The fireplace also received an upgrade, cladding the generous brick hearth in a striking Calacatta Turquoise and adding cold rolled steel up the fireplace wall, channeled in brass. For the recessed bar we added several glamorous touches including sumptuous wallpaper, brass knurled sconces and hardware, smokey-mirrored backsplash with brass-edged shelves and a black sink surrounded in the same turquoise marble.
No expense was spared for the guest bath either, with a custom stone sink made from Calacatta Viola marble with the same stone cladding shower floor and walls. A hexagonal basalt floor tile and gray wall paint completed the moody, luxurious look.
