This typical Texas ranch house was in need of a thorough revamp. Shiny wood paneling, an outdated kitchen, and in my opinion one of the worst offending design trends of the 60s and 70s; popcorn ceilings, were just a few things that had to go. The clients wanted to create a family friendly environment which was also conducive to entertaining. As a result we opened up the narrow kitchen by removing the wall between kitchen and living room and replacing it with a peninsula. The kitchen bay window was the perfect place to add a breakfast nook, while behind the kitchen there was space for a laundry room and pantry. The entry and dining room also underwent a substantial transformation, color-drenching wainscot, walls and ceiling in a dark blue and adding brass lighting fixtures and a blonde wood dining table and buffet. Durable, easy to clean finishes were a must, so we opted for a large format porcelain floor tile, paint grade cabinets and quartz countertops.
The garage was converted into a flex space / playroom, with extra bunk beds for kids’ sleepovers. The kids / guest bath strikes a pleasant balance of feeling playful without being childish, with blush walls, a blue vanity cabinetry, chrome and black fixtures and a black and white patterned floor. The final upgrade was to the primary bathroom for which we selected an earthy, desert pallet with terra cotta colored cabinetry, camel-colored tile and sconces with a walnut canopy.
